Bailey’s request to skip trial was denied after he pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his parents in November 2025. His attorneys argued that his actions stemmed from severe psychiatric dysfunction and did not amount to a crime.

According to Stout, “a combination of autism, schizophrenia and hormonal destabilization” created the unfortunate circumstances that led to Bailey’s crimes.
Defense attorneys also cited his mental health problems and lack of prior criminal history, calling for a lighter sentence. While in custody, Bailey was also charged with assaulting two staff members on October 28, 2024, at Purgatory Correctional Institution.

Stout asked the court to consider concurrent sentences, which would reduce the overall prison sentence, rather than consecutive sentences, which would result in life in prison.
However, he was ultimately sentenced to two consecutive sentences of 25 years to life for the double murder of his parents. Additionally, Bailey also received a sentence of up to five years in prison for aggravated assault.

Bailey’s brothers, Corey and Dustin, were present at the hearing and supported consecutive sentences, with Corey stating, “The best for us and the best for Mia is probably to stay in prison as long as possible.”
At the same time, the brothers opposed the idea of a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
“Every life deserves recognition. This is non-negotiable, but we ask the court to understand that life without the possibility of parole is not justice,” Dustin told the court.
He reportedly believes that his sister’s crimes were partly related to the effects of “powerful hormones” and other substances prescribed to her.
“We fully supports LGBTQ rights. “This has nothing to do with identity,” he said.

Corey said to court, “I don’t think there’s any true justice in something like this,” before adding, “We’ve lost our parents, and we’ve lost our siblings in a lot of ways. Whatever happens, we’ve lost as a family in this sentence.”
The Utah Board of Pardons and Paroles will decide the length of Bailey’s prison sentence after it is handed down. Bailey is also awaiting trial on two third-degree felony charges for allegedly assaulting a staff member while he was in the correctional facility.
A similar incident occurred in 2018 when Andrea Balcer was sentenced to 40 years in prison after she allegedly screamed and stabbed her parents to death while struggling with gender identity.
