With a survey conducted in 2023 of 5,902 Americans, the Pew Research Center reinforced the idea that workplace relationships play a major role in our overall satisfaction with our jobs.
This means that even if employees aren’t completely satisfied with their salary, workload, or career opportunities, the people around them can still make their days at the office worthwhile.
However, at the same time, unnecessary drama, lack of support, and general poor communication can overshadow all the positive aspects of the job and significantly reduce employee happiness.
So in an effort to remind ourselves to remain vigilant towards each other, let’s take a look at a recent online discussion. It started when Reddit user Puzzlehead_Eye8358 asked everyone on the platform to share the craziest and most inappropriate things coworkers have said to them at work.
“You can’t wear that lipstick, it makes me want to kiss you. You can’t wear that dress.”
Then, when he caught me on the stairs, “can I kiss you?”
He is in his 50s. I’m in my 20s. I want to vomit.
During a staff meeting, my boss told me that we could all be replaced by trained monkeys. It was one of those encounters where one person made a terrible mistake, but they chose to punish everyone. I told my boss that if he could find a monkey with a Master’s degree in microbiology, so he could meet the regulatory requirements, then go ahead. He kept his mouth shut.
I am 18 years old and work at a STATE AGENCY. After months of sexual harassment, I resigned. In my last few weeks, one of the officers said, “You know we’re going to fuck at least once before you leave, right?”.
The old man I had trained. He was a complainer, but mostly competent so we ignored him. He grew up locally and is proud of it.
A new company doctor was introduced, and I attended the presentation, talking to him a bit. Nice woman, seems competent. Asian Heritage.
And the old man, when he heard his name, said, “Oh no. I bet he has a bad accent.”
Looking into his eyes, I said, “Yeah, it’s really hard to understand. He grew up in your neighborhood.”
The parents blushed and suddenly went to get coffee. Another member of our team was dying while trying to hold back his laughter….
At my last job, a coworker told me he thought he had herpes. Then he started showing me photos of parts of his body accompanied by symptoms. At that time we were on our lunch break…lunch.
I used to have a job at the federal level and my boss thought it would be a good idea to ask me who I voted for in the general election. When I refused, he said he deserved to know, and then I hung up on him. I immediately called a colleague, and there would be a note of his highly inappropriate question. The next day, he called me in a panic, saying that his leg hurt, and that was the reason why he asked.
I was once paired with a colleague on a shift and this was the day after my ex and I had a rather messy break up. It came up in conversation and then he decided it was appropriate to ask if he could buy me nudes since I was single now.
A coworker sent me an unsolicited photo of his hemorrhoids which caused him to miss work. We don’t work in the same office. I didn’t know he missed work.
When ordering the uniform, I told the assistant mgr FOH I needed size 8 pants. He said he didn’t know they made sizes that big. I felt great after that.
I used to work in a chemical factory, so the “worst” thing in my opinion was sexual harassment.
Dude offered to help me in the restroom. He’s more graphic but I’ll let you use your imagination.
The good thing is that I see how many people I work with and around me say that is unacceptable. They helped me file a complaint and protected me until he ran away.
The former Director of the Lake Erie Research Center told me I was stupid and crazy for getting pregnant. Then she regaled me with stories of when she did research while she was pregnant. But it’s different because it’s him and he’s special.
Did I mention he’s no longer the director?
When I worked in retail, less than 10 minutes after meeting a new manager, he told me about his hard times, his marital problems, and his crying. I handed him a tissue and prayed that the customer or him would stop.
One of the dishwashers at the restaurant where I was manager had convinced himself that he was in love with me. He said that I was beautiful, funny, and so on. I don’t think it’s a big deal, because it never seems threatening. Around Christmas one year, he gave me “gifts” of lacy underwear, a box of chocolates & tried to kiss me (which I didn’t allow to happen). I told him that was totally inappropriate & he shouldn’t do that to anyone at work. He then told me he was going to quit so we could be together (who knows what reality he was facing) & I assumed he wouldn’t see the point then or ever. I told HR, and he was immediately fired.
The person who trained me in my current position once asked, “You don’t change your own oil? Did your father abandon your family when you were little or something?”.
At my first job in my 20s, the guy I worked for came in one morning and told me, “I dreamed about you last night. But I couldn’t tell you about it” I was completely disgusted and didn’t ask. Another time he asked me to help him find three hidden files on his computer. Correct [adult videos]. He married, had three children, and became a pillar of the community. I was so happy when I was able to stop.
