Retired 9m to get winter fuel payments

There was a big reaction after the announcement of the government last summer that payments will only be given to retirees who claim benefits, especially because the cost of living has jumped in recent years, making many people struggle to meet their needs.

Energy bills in particular have increased sharply, and although the price limit will decrease in July, they remain much higher than in previous years.

Workers suffer a number of losses in the local election last month, which may have triggered re -thought, even though the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, promised directly after the election that there would be no reversal in the winter fuel payment policy.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: “Targeting winter fuel payments is a difficult decision, but the right decision because our inheritance has been abandoned by the previous government. It is also true that we continue to test this payment so that it is targeted and fair, rather than restoring the feasibility of all people, including the most richest.

“But we have now acted to expand the feasibility of winter fuel payments so that there is no retirement with lower income will be left behind. This means that more than three quarters of retirees receive payments in the UK and Wales this winter.”

Changes will make the government back £ 1.25 billion, while testing the average winter fuel payment will save around £ 450 million.
