The actor took on the role of Lord Voldemort in the future Harry Potter the series had some big shoes to fill after Ralph Fiennes’ impressive run as the villain over six years.
But while Fiennes has stated his preference Cillian Murphy to become his replacement, this Irish actor shut down speculation that he would be involved in the franchise.

Online whispers linking Murphy to the role began six months ago, after a scooper claimed to know someone who worked at the company Harry Potter appearing as a background actor.

The person claimed that the show would be filmed in Hemel Hempstead and that Oppenheimer actor has been cast as Voldemort, among other unverified claims.
When Hemel Hempstead was later confirmed as one of the locations, many assumed that the claims about Murphy were also true.
Ralph Fiennes later praised Murphy, calling him a “very good” choice to play the Dark Lord, which made fans even more excited about the supposed casting decision.

However, when asked about the speculation surrounding the role, the Oscar-winning actor provided clarification Time that he “categorically did not” play Voldemort. He also asked, “Can you make it the headline?”
That Harry Potter the show has given her the lead role. Voldemort is the only main character who is still a question mark. According to insider Daniel Richtman, MCU star Paul Bettany is at the top of HBO’s list to play the villain.
The Irishman denied being chosen for the role after Ralph Fiennes said he would be a “very good” choice.

There has been no official confirmation from HBO or Warner Bros. that Bettany will play Voldemort, but many fans of the franchise have already given the actor a thumbs up.

“He’s perfect for that,” said a third user.
“Not a bad choice actually… would go with Cillian Murphy or maybe even get Ralph Fiennes back personally, but Bettany could do it,” commented one fan.
Meanwhile, other fans said they couldn’t see Murphy playing the same role for multiple seasons. “I can’t imagine Cillian Murphy committing to such a significant role in a major franchise that would keep him tied to the project for years.”

Voldemort was famously played in the original version Harry Potter films by Ralph Fiennes, starting in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In the first three films, the role was played by different actors, including Richard Bremmer, Ian Hart, and Christian Coulson.
In January, Fiennes was asked who should fill his shoes in the upcoming series, and he replied, “Well, I’m told those shoes are filled, right?”

The reporter then asked, “Who do you think should have done it? If anyone could have done Voldemort like you did Voldemort…”
“I already said it, I think Cillian Murphy is very good,” the actor replied. “I think they’ve already cast, right? I don’t know. I think they’ve cast.”

Another name suggested for the role on social media is Cynthia Erivo. Because the showrunners have taken liberties with casting decisions, choosing actors who bear no resemblance to the original film, fans have speculated that Voldemort could have been gender-swapped. The first season of the Wizarding World TV adaptation is expected to be released on HBO in early or mid-2027.
