Miss Kannina is an Aboriginal artist who was raised on Bruun Island off the southern coast of Tasmania.
He belongs to the native Australian community, whose ancestors have lived in mainland Australia and Tasmania for tens of thousands of years before British colonialism.
The singer released an EP debut self-titled in September 2024 and later became the first independent Aboriginal woman ever nominated for the single debut in ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards) in the same year.
When asked during Rolling Stone Interviews about what made him stand out from other artists, he said he was not worried about his “competitors” as long as he made art that represented who he was.
“For me, music is an expression of my identity and a place for me to feel safe and escape from a very real struggle in my life and community,” he said in an April interview.
