Gym anxiety refers to the experience of feeling anxious, intimidated, or shame before, during, or after exercising in the gym. For some people, gym’s anxiety can interfere with their ability to enjoy sports, and in some cases, go to the gym at all.
Gym anxiety can manifest in some negative thoughts or feelings, and the most common comes from the fear of judgment, lack of self -confidence, or feeling not in its place. For example, you might be afraid of being judged by your sports abilities or appearance.
Joining a new gym, not accustomed to equipment, and struggling with body image problems can also intensify the anxiety of the gym. Studies show that other factors, such as changing in front of others, attention to the cleanliness of the equipment, and feeling lost or overwhelmed in a crowded space, all of them can contribute.
Research also found that women are more likely to experience gym anxiety than men. For example, this study found that more than a quarter of women (28%) often felt anxious in the gym environment, and 61% preferred to exercise in a special room for women. Meanwhile, only 7% of women say they feel right -really comfortable in any gym settings.
The main cause of the anxiety of the gym reported among women is the lack of knowledge about sports and shapes, feeling as if they are being stared by others, and a sense of discomfort as a whole.
As a result, this study found that while many women realized the benefits of resistance training, they still did not do the recommended amounts. While some participants said time and efforts were obstacles, researchers found that feelings of intimidation and assessment, as well as lack of knowledge about how to use equipment, play a key role.
Which said, while the study showed that gym anxiety was more common among women, men could still be affected.
